Congratulations to Sibel Akkaba

Congratulations to Sibel Akkaba for winning such a prestigious prize at the Sanlıurfa mosaic competition/2017, an incredible achievement made possible by the artist’s incredible perseverance and ability, as well as by what she learned during the recent #Symposium here in Italy
With over 12,000 years of history, Gobeklitepe, which is located in Sanliurfa and is where prophecies state that the prophet Ibrahim, (The father of the Prophets) was thrown into the burning flames which then the fire turned into water. This is the location where the 2000 year old Edessa mosaics were found and this is also where the current mosaic art exhibition is being held. This recent competition promotes the beautiful city of Sanliurfa and I was just informed immediately upon my return from my symposium and I felt compelled to participate!

The mosaic Symposium which I recently participated in was very informative and I believe my biggest and most humbling gain was working with a master like Giulio Menossi. I would like to thank him for all of the useful information and training in modern mosaic mastery.

Joining a competition of this scale and working with marble limestone was first for me. Even though I had a difficult time in the beginning, the hard work paid off and I overcome all the odds. I tried to utilize smalt just to give my work some color.

My mosaic artwork which measured 60×80 cm was nominated as the runner up from a panel of 9 judges in this field of expertise.

I must admit I am truly very happy and deeply proud of my growth. I would like to conclude with a quotation from the President of the Jury, the famous Turkish painter, Ph.D Devrim Erbil.

“First of all, there were no first place position in this competition because there were no perfect art work that represents or reflects Urfa in regards to mixing traditional and modern mosaic art in one piece. In the meantime,

The closest candidate combining tradition and modernism became second place. It has such a unique surface that the gleaming marble is chaos itself but at the same time so rich, influential and creative! All of a sudden the middle of art work opens and you see a second layer which another history surfaces and chaos subsides. It reveals an art work from hundreds of thousands years history. Art work which was leading but placed second is from Sibel Akkaba.”
